Popular Sovereignty the government gets its authority from the people
Limited Government the government only has the power that the Constitution gives it
Separation of Powers the government is divided into three branches (legislative, executive, judicial. Each branch has its own powers)
Checks and Balances the system safeguards against the abuse of power. Each branch has the power to check or limit the actions of the other two.
Federalism the division of power between the federal and state governments
Republicanism Citizens elect representatives to carry out their will, instead of taking part directly
