Food web network of complex interactions formed by the feeding relationships among the various organisms in an ecosystem
energy flow The passage of energy through the components of an ecosystem
Producer organism that can capture energy from sunlight or chemicals and use it to produce food from inorganic compounds; also called an autotroph
consumer organism that relies on other organisms for its energy and food supply; also called a heterotroph
decomposer an organism that breaks down chemicals from wastes and dead organisms, and returns important materials to the soil and water
sun as source The sun provides energy to the earth
herbivore organism that obtains energy by eating only plants
omnivore an animal that feeds on both animal and vegetable substances
carnivore organism that obtains energy by eating animals
primary consumer consumer that feeds directly on producers
secondary consumer Organism that feeds only on primary consumers, including carnivores and some omnivores.
scavenger a carnivore that feeds on the bodies of dead organisms
