Berlin Conference (1884-1885)
Also called the Congo Conference, this conference was called to divide Africa amongst the more powerful European nations. Arranged by Bismarck, it was intended to help Germany colonize because Germany was new to Imperialism. It's result was the "scramble for Africa."

Berlin Conference (1884-1885) Also called the Congo Conference, this conference was called to divide Africa amongst the more powerful European nations. Arranged by Bismarck, it was intended to help Germany colonize because Germany was new to Imperialism. It's result was the "scramble for Africa."
Otto Von Bismark (As of where we are in the book now) This man is the current chancellor of Germany. Wants to keep peace amongst the European countries Brings Germany in and out of alliances to protect welfare of his country. Butts heads (lol, butts) with Kaiser William II and is dismissed in 1890.
Boer War (1899-1902) War between Britain and rebelling Boers. Britain burned crops and created concentration camps. Britain won
Congress of Berlin (1878)Brought together by Bismarck end the Russo-Turkish War and to prevent an entire European war. Peace was kept through the partition of the Ottoman Empire; Russians obtained Batum and Kars, Romania and Serbia gained independence, recognized Montenegro as an independent state, and divided Bulgaria into three zones still within the Ottoman Empire, Austria-Hungary was to "occupy and administer" Bosnia, Britain received Cyprus (a large island), France was told they might expand from Algeria into Tunisia, Italy got cheated out of anything, and Germany got nothing. This treaty averted war for the time being but left both the Russians and Turks dissatisfied and later was one of the causes for the First World War. (yay auto define)
Dual Alliance (1879-1918) Bismarck "secretly" allies Germany with Austria-Hungary, "unknown" to Russia; originally promising neutrality if one of them was attacked by another, especially by France
Entente Cordiale (1904-1907) A series of agreements between Britain and France. Not formal treaty and had no military provisions. In particular, Britain gave France a "free hand" in Morocco in return for French recognition of British control in Egypt.

Imperialism/ New Imperialism "The policy of extending a nation's authority by territorial acquisition or by establishing economic and political hegemony over other nations"

Open Door Policy (1899) American government instates a policy saying that all nations have equal rights to trade anywhere in China
Ottoman Empire/ "Sick Man of Europe" This is what he Ottoman empire was referred to as. The other countries were waiting for it to "just die already" so they could partition it for themselves
Reinsurance Treaty (1887-1892)Russia had refused to renew the Three Emperors Alliance. Bismarck created the __________ _______, by which both states promised neutrality if the other was attacked. It was ended in 1890 because the new Emperor William of Germany had dismissed Bismarck because of his friendly policy toward Russia. Then he had refused to renew the aforementioned _______.
Russo-Japanese War (1904-1905) War between Japan and Russia over Manchurian territory; resulted in the defeat of Russia by the Japanese navy.
"Scramble for Africa" Sudden wave of conquests in Africa by European powers in the 1880s and 1890s. Britain obtained most of eastern Africa, France most of northwestern Africa. Other countries (Germany, Belgium, Portugal, Italy, and Spain) acquired lesser amounts. (p. 731)
Spanish-American War (1898) War fought between the US and Spain in Cuba and the Philippines. It lasted less than 3 months and resulted in Cuba's independence as well as the US annexing Puerto Rico, Guam, and the Philippines.

"The White Man's Burden" A poem by Rudyard Kipling that was critical towards imperialism. Saw the world as Eurocentric and criticized the "white man's" need to westernize other cultures.
Three Emperors' League (1873-1879) A conservative alliance that linked the monarchs of Austria-Hungary, Germany, and Russia against radical movements. Bismark wanted this so that, if in war, Germany would only have to fight western front.
Triple Alliance (1882-1914) Italy was added to the already existing Dual Alliance between Germany and Austria-Hungary
Triple Entente (1907-1914) Alliance between France, Great Britain and Russia signed this agreement that meant that if one of these countries were to be attacked by neighboring countries, the other two would help defend their country. Wanted to stop Germany's growing of power. Prior to WWI.
William II (Germany) Emperor of Germany from 1888-1918
1890, he dismissed Bismark, and would not renew the reinsurance treaty with Russia, causing Germany to have to fight a two-front war. This blunder led Germany to defeat.
