first quarter moon | The moon's phase in which the moon appears as a half circle. The right half of the moon is visible as it grows toward a full moon. |

waxing | pertaining to the period during which the visible surface of the moon increases |
waning | pertaining to the period during which the visible surface of the moon decreases |

low tide | the lowest point on shore that the ocean reaches (occurs when the sun and moon are not in line) |
spring tide | When the tidal range is greatest. (full moon and new moon) |
neap tide | a less than average tide occurring at the first and third quarters of the moon |
Galilean moons | The name given to Jupiter's four largest moons, Io, Europa, Callisto & Ganymede. They were discovered independently by Galileo Galilei and Simon Marius. |
asteroids | rocky metallic objects that orbit the sun but are too small to be considered planets |
comets | balls of ice, rock, and dust in space with a tail |
meteors | smaller chunks of small matter, that burn up in our atmosphere called shooting stars |
gibbous | pertaining to the period during which the visible surface of the moon is greater than half |
crescent | pertaining to the period during which the visible surface of the moon is less than half and crescent shaped |
