axis the center around which something rotates
rotation spinning of Earth on its imaginary axis, which takes about 24 hours to complete and causes day and night to occur
revolution the movement of an object around another object
tilt to incline or bend from a vertical position
seasons they are caused by the tilt of the earth in relation to the sun.
equinox either of two times of the year when the sun crosses the plane of the earth's equator and day and night are of almost equal length
solstice twice-yearly point at which the Sun reaches its greatest distance north or south of the equator
lunar cycle The predictable 29-day cycle of the moon as it orbits Earth and progresses through several phases.
moon phases The changing appearances of the Moon as seen from Earth, new moon, (waxing or waning) crescent moon, quarter moon, (waxing or waning) gibbous moon, and full moon
new moon moon phase that occurs when the Moon is between Earth and the Sun, at which point the Moon cannot be seen because its lighted half is facing the Sun and its dark side faces Earth
first quarter moon The moon's phase in which the moon appears as a half circle. The right half of the moon is visible as it grows toward a full moon.
Full moon the time when the moon is fully illuminated
third/last quarter moon The quarter moon after a full moon.
waxing pertaining to the period during which the visible surface of the moon increases
waning pertaining to the period during which the visible surface of the moon decreases
high tide the highest point on shore that the ocean reaches (occurs when the sun and moon are in line)
low tide the lowest point on shore that the ocean reaches (occurs when the sun and moon are not in line)
spring tide When the tidal range is greatest. (full moon and new moon)
neap tide a less than average tide occurring at the first and third quarters of the moon
Galilean moons The name given to Jupiter's four largest moons, Io, Europa, Callisto & Ganymede. They were discovered independently by Galileo Galilei and Simon Marius.
asteroids rocky metallic objects that orbit the sun but are too small to be considered planets
comets balls of ice, rock, and dust in space with a tail
meteors smaller chunks of small matter, that burn up in our atmosphere called shooting stars
gibbous pertaining to the period during which the visible surface of the moon is greater than half
crescent pertaining to the period during which the visible surface of the moon is less than half and crescent shaped
