Hellenists | Greek thinking Jews who were worldly and Sophisticated. |
Pharisees | Scholars and lawyers of Torah, leaders who kept the laws and tradition. Believed in the Afterlife. |
Sadducees | Leaders and priestly aristocratic. Disappeared with destruction of Temple, tied to temple worship. Did not believe in the Afterlife. |
Samaritans | Remnants of Northern Tribes. Half breeds (similar to now a days black and white marriages). Worshiped Yahweh and despised Jews. |
God-Fearers | Gentiles: non-Jews. Accepted teachings of Jews. |
Proselytes | Gentiles: non-Jews. Often women, made pilgrimage to Jerusalem. |
Zealots | Wanted a "David-like King" for Messiah. Patriotic, extremists who had no mercy and were mean towards Rome. |
Essenes | Jewish and PURE: no marriage, believed in purity, and withdrew from society. |
