Epidemiology The study of the distribution and determinants of health-related states or events in specified populations, and the application of this study to the control of health problems
Incidence The number of new cases of a particular problem or condition that are identified or arise in a specified area during a specified period of time
Indicator A measure of a specific component of a health improvement strategy.
Life Expectancy Average expected length of life for a group of people, of a particular age, chosen at a particular time
Meta-Analysis A systematic, typically quantitative method for combining information from multiple studies
Metropolitan Statistical Area (MSA) A geographic area that includes at least one city with 50,000 or more inhabitants, or a Census Bureau-defined urbanized area of at least 50,000 inhabitants
Morbidity A measure of disease incidence or prevalence in a given population, location, or other grouping of interest
Mortality A measure of deaths in a given population, location, or other grouping of interest.
Prevalence Number of existing cases with a particular condition in a specified area at a specified time
Rate Occurrence or existence of a particular condition expressed as a proportion of units in the population
Survey Systematic collection of information from a defined population, usually by means of interviews or questionnaires administered to a sample of units in the population
