### amplitude

the height of a wave's crest

### blue shift

increase in frequency

### constructive interference

the interference that occurs when two waves combine to make a wave with a larger amplitude

### doppler effect

An observed change in the frequency of a wave when the source or observer is moving

### forced vibration

The setting up of vibrations in an object by a vibrating force.

### in phase

when the peaks and troughs of a pair of waves occur at the same time and in the same location

### natural frequency

the frequency at which an object vibrates when it is disturbed

### out of phase

when the peaks and troughs of a pair of waves occur at different times

### rarefaction

The part of a longitudinal wave where the particles of the medium are far apart

### resonance

when the frequency of a vibration forced on an object matches the objects natural frequency=increase in amplitude

### simple harmonic motion

periodic motion in which the restoring force is proportional to the displacement

### standing wave

a pattern of vibration that simulates a wave that is standing still

### trough

the lowest point of a wave

### wavelength

The distance from the crest of a wave to the next

### antinodes

the points of maximum amplitude on a standing wave

### bow wave

the v-wave produced by an object moving on a liquid surface faster than a wave speed

### crest

the highest point of a wave

### frequency

the number of complete wavelengths that pass a point in a given time

### node

a point of zero amplitude on a standing wave

### pitch

how high or low a sound is

### sine curve

a pictorial representation of a wave

above 20,000 Hz

### vibration

a repeated back and forth or up and down motion

### beats

periodic variation in the loudness of sound

### compression

the part of a longitudinal wave where the particles of the medium are close together

### destructive interference

Combination of waves where crests of one wave overlap troughs of another, resulting in a wave of decreased amplitude.

### hertz

The unit of Frequency

### infrasonic

sound waves with frequencies below 20 hertz

### longitudinal wave

A wave in which the vibration is in the same direction as that in which the wave is traveling

### period

the amount of time it takes one wavelength to pass a point

### red shift

the change in the wavelength of light due to an object moving away from the observer.

### shock wave

A cone shaped wave produced by an object moving at supersonic speed through a fluid.

### sonic boom

the loud sound resulting from the incidence of a shock wave

### transverse wave

a wave that moves the medium in a direction perpendicular to the direction in which the wave travels

### wave

A disturbance that transfers energy from place to place
