Split Sentence | A type of sentence whereby a judge renders a sentence involving incarceration for a specific period of time followed closely by a probationary period for a fixed period of time. |
Shock incarceration | The process of incarcerating an individual for a brief period of time and then releasing him or her on probation. |
Intermittent incarceration | Type of incarceration that allows the offender who was sentenced to probation to spend weekends or nights in a local jail. The offender is part of the community while still being supervised in a controlled correctional facility. |
Modification of Sentence | The adjustment of an offender's sentence based on a number of factors, including in the individual's good behavior in prison. |
Probation officer | An official employed by a probation agency who is mostly responsible for preparing presentence investigation reports, supervising offenders on probation, and helping to incorporate offenders back into society as lawful citizens. |
PSI (Pre-Sentence Investigation Report) | A report that is filed by probation or parole officers. It provides background information about the offender for the purpose of influencing the sentence imposed by the judge or parole board. |
