Split Sentence A type of sentence whereby a judge renders a sentence involving incarceration for a specific period of time followed closely by a probationary period for a fixed period of time.
Shock incarceration The process of incarcerating an individual for a brief period of time and then releasing him or her on probation.
Intermittent incarceration Type of incarceration that allows the offender who was sentenced to probation to spend weekends or nights in a local jail. The offender is part of the community while still being supervised in a controlled correctional facility.
Modification of Sentence The adjustment of an offender's sentence based on a number of factors, including in the individual's good behavior in prison.
Probation officer An official employed by a probation agency who is mostly responsible for preparing presentence investigation reports, supervising offenders on probation, and helping to incorporate offenders back into society as lawful citizens.
PSI (Pre-Sentence Investigation Report) A report that is filed by probation or parole officers. It provides background information about the offender for the purpose of influencing the sentence imposed by the judge or parole board.
