antecedent boundary -boundary line established well before the area was well populated

Exclusive economic zone (EEZ) - zone of exploration extending 200 nautical miles seaward from a coastal state, established by the (UNCLOS)
fragmented state - a state whose territory is broken up in islands
functional dispute - disagreement between neighboring states over policies to be applied to their common border
geometric boundary - boundary without obvious physical geographic basis
gerrymandering - redraw voting district boundaries in such a way as to give one political party maximum electoral advantage; reducing another e.g blacks right after civil war
irredentism - policy of a state wishing to incorporate within itself inhabited by people who have ethnic or linguistic links with the country but that lies within a neighboring state
nation - culturally distinctive group of people occupying a specific territory and bound together by a sense of unity from a shared ethnicity or customs
nationalism - sense of unity binding the people of a state together; devotion of interests of a particular country or nation
nation-state -state whose territory is identical to that occupied by a particular ethnic group or nation
natural boundary - boundary line based on recognized physio-graphic features; e.g mountains, rivers
perforated state -state whose territory is interrupted by a separated, independent state totally contained in its borders
physical boundary the natural landscape plus visible elements of material culture
political boundary -branch of human geography concerned with the spatial analysis of political phenomena
positional dispute - disagreement about the actual location of a boundary
porrupt state - state basically compacted in form but with one or more narrow extensions of territory
regionalism - group of frequently ethnic grouped-identification with a particular region of a state rather than with the state as a whole
relic boundary -a former boundary; marked by some cultural landscape
resource dispute -disagreement over the control or use of shared resources, such as boundary river or jointly claimed fishing grounds
separatism - the action of an ethnic group trying to separate and gain independence from the dominant state
state -independent political unit occupying a defined, permanently populated territory having full sovereignty
sub-nationalism -the feeling that one was primary alligence to a traditional group or nation rather than to the state they are within
subsequent boundary -boundary that has been established after the area in question has been settled and cultural characteristics are the bounded area
superimposed boundary - boundary line placed over an existing cultural pattern
supranationalism term applied to associations created by three or more states for their mutual benefit
territorial dispute -disagreement between states over the control of the surface area
