| quadrant | Used to measure a population. A small square area, in which all individuals are counted. Quadrants can be temporary of left to study change over time. They can be placed at regular intervals or random. |
| direct count | the actual number of each species counted. |
| area coverage | this method is good if you have a lot of organisms. This method gives the area covered by the species not the actual number. |
| quick estimate | an estimate of the number of organisms in the quadrant/sample. |
| line transect | individuals along a line counted at regular intervals. |
| belt transect | individuals within a band that are counted. Often used in forestry. |
| mark and recapture | Used measure a population of animals that move around. They are caught, marked, released and after an appropriate time, another sample is collected. |
| Predation | a biological interaction where a predator (an organism that hunts) feeds on its prey, the organism that is attacked |
| emmigration | the act of a population leaving one's native area to settle in another |

| climax community | the state of development of a community in an area over time, where it has reached a stable state |
| canopy | the upper level in a forest that is higher than other layers |
| detritivore | organism that feeds on decayed material |
