Heredity | passing of traits from parents to offspring |
Alleles | alternate form of that a gene may have for a single trait which can be dominant or recessive |
Genetics | the study of how traits are inherited through the actions of alleles |
Hybrid | an offspring that was given different genetic information for a trait from each parent |
Purebred | an organism that always produces the same traits generation after generation |
Dominant factor | describes a trait that covers over, or dominates another form of that trait (capital letter) |
Recessive factor | describes a trait that is covered over or dominated by another trait (lower case letter) |
Probability | a branch of mathematics that helps you predict the chance that something will happen |
Punnett Square | a tool used to predict the probability of certain traits in offspring that shows the different ways alleles can combine |
Genotype | genetic make up of an organism (letter combination DD, Dd, dd) |
Phenotype | outward physical appearance or behavior of an organism (how it looks/acts- dimples or no dimples) |
Homozygous | describes an organism with two alleles that are the same for a trait (Dominant DD or Recessive dd) |
Heterozygous | describe an organism with two different alleles for a trait (Dd) |
