The musical ladder on which the notes are placed.
Treble Clef
Treble clefs appear at the beginning of each right hand line of music, and indicate the pitching of the notes we play.
Bass Clef
Bass clefs appear at the beginning of each left hand line of music, and indicate the pitching of the notes we play.
Barline
These are drawn at the end of each bar to symbolise when the required number of beats has been reached.
Final Barline
These are placed at the end of the music to symbolise when the piece is finished.
3/4 Time Signature
Every bar is the length of 3 crotchet
(quarter note) beats.
4/4 Time Signature
Every bar is the length of 4 crotchet
(quarter note) beats.
Common Time
An alternative name for the 4/4 Time
Signature.
6/8 Time Signature
Every bar is the length of 8 quaver
(eighth note) beats.
Repeat Marks
Repeat the music between these signs.
Whole Note - Semibreve
A note that is worth 4 beats.
Half Note - Minim
A note that is worth 2 beats.
Quarter Note - Crotchet
A note that is worth 1 beat.
Eighth Note - Quaver
A note that is worth ½ beat.
Whole Note Rest - Semibreve Rest
A rest that is worth 4 beats.
Half Note Rest - Minim rest
A rest that is worth 2 beats.
Quarter Note Rest - Crotchet Rest
A rest that is worth 1 beat.
Eighth Note Rest - Quaver Rest
A rest that is worth ½ beat.
Forte
To play loudly.
Piano
To play quietly.
Mezzo Piano
To play moderately quietly.
Mezzo Forte
To play moderately loudly.
Fermata or Pause
Hold the note for longer than its written value.
Sharp
Raise the note one step (semitone) to the Right
Flat
Lower the note one step (semitone) to the Left
Natural
Cancels the sharp or flat indicated previously.
Tie
Joins two notes of the same pitch together to make a longer note.
Staccato
All the notes grouped with a phrase mark should be played smoothly, with no gaps
between.
Ritenuto
Gradually slowing down.
Crescendo
Gradually getting louder.
Diminuendo
Gradually getting quieter.
