Terms | Definitions |
|---|---|
height | The length of the segment perpendicular to the base with endpoints on opposite sides. In a triangle, the distance from a base to the opposite side. |
lateral face | One side of a three-dimensional figure. |
three-dimensional figure | A figure with length, width and depth (or height). |
pi | The ratio of the circumference of a circle to its diameter. An approximation often used for pi is 3.14. |
rectangular prism | A solid figure that has two parallel and congruent bases that are rectangles. |
edge | The segment formed by intersecting faces of a three-dimensional figure. |
cylinder | A three-dimensional figure with two parallel congruent circular bases. |
center | The given point from which all points on a circle or sphere are the same distance. |
cone | A three- dimensional figure with a curved surface and a circular base. |
volume | The number of cubic units needed to fill the space occupied by a solid. |
pyramid | A three-dimensional figure with at least three lateral faces that are triangles and only one base. |
radius | The distance from the center of a circle to any point on the circle. |
triangular prism | A prism that has bases that are triangles. |
diameter | The distance across a circle through its center. |
semicircle | Half of a circle. |
composite figure (complex figure) | A figure made of circles, rectangles, squares, and other two-dimensional figures. |
vertex (vertices) | 1.The point where the edges of a three dimensional figure intersect.2. A vertex of an angle is the common endpoint of the rays forming the angle. |
