Definitions

height The length of the segment perpendicular to the base with endpoints on opposite sides. In a triangle, the distance from a base to the opposite side.
lateral face One side of a three-dimensional figure.
three-dimensional figure A figure with length, width and depth (or height).
pi The ratio of the circumference of a circle to its diameter. An approximation often used for pi is 3.14.
rectangular prism A solid figure that has two parallel and congruent bases that are rectangles.
edge The segment formed by intersecting faces of a three-dimensional figure.
cylinder A three-dimensional figure with two parallel congruent circular bases.
center The given point from which all points on a circle or sphere are the same distance.
cone A three- dimensional figure with a curved surface and a circular base.
volume The number of cubic units needed to fill the space occupied by a solid.
pyramid A three-dimensional figure with at least three lateral faces that are triangles and only one base.
radius The distance from the center of a circle to any point on the circle.
triangular prism A prism that has bases that are triangles.
diameter The distance across a circle through its center.
semicircle Half of a circle.
composite figure (complex figure) A figure made of circles, rectangles, squares, and other two-dimensional figures.
vertex (vertices) 1.The point where the edges of a three dimensional figure intersect.
2. A vertex of an angle is the common endpoint of the rays forming the angle.
