Definitions

Climate the general weather of an area over a long period of time.
Range of Temperatures and amount of precipitation a place experiences determines its climate
Certain weather patterns are the same or repeated year after year in each type of climate.
Environment of a region is affected by the climate
Deserts very dry, but can be either hot or cold
Swamps found in warm and wet environments
Mountain tops have cool temps and low humidity
Base of mountain usually has the same climate as the surrounding area
Factors affecting climate average temperatures and precipitation are the key parts
latitude, elevation and nearness to large bodies of water affect climate
latitude the distance north or south of the equator, which affects temperature
elevation how much above sea level an area is
Higher elevation means lower temperatures because air gets cooler as it rises
Large bodies of water - oceans and large lakes temps are usually milder because water heats and cools at a slower rate than on land
Hurricanes - Earth's biggest storms are hundreds of kilometers wide with winds that can top 155 mph- miles per hour
Warm water and high humidity feeds the storm
Hurricane watch storm is still a couple of days away, it can hit that area or change paths
Hurricane warning the storm will hit - every family should have an emergency plan
tornadoes among the most destructive storms
Hurrican winds can be up to 250mph
Where tornadoes form at fronts, where very cold air masses meet very warm air masses
Tornado watch conditions right for a tornado to form
tornado warning a tornado has been spotted
What should you do when a tornado is coming take cover right away; - lowest part of the house in an inside room with no windows
Winter storms in northern areas can bury roads and buildings and create icy and dangerous snowy conditions
Emergency kit, during winter storms keep in car and in house to be prepared for several days without power or heat.
Floods happen when there is more precipitation than usual in a region
Prolonged period of rain can cause floods because ground cannot absorb water and it runs into rivers and streams
Before an emergency happens you should have an emergency plan and an emergency supply kit.
