Are there other reasons a woman would stay in an abusive relationship? | -Very low esteem, as is the man to who they have become attached-Some have no economic or legal choice -They also place great value upon traditional notions of a loving relationship between man and woman, believing that if they fail at marriage, they have totally failed at life |
Even if they're not the ones to provoke the beatings, the woman takes that much responsibility for the abuse? | -Yes. Such women believe that they are truly the cause of the battering man's violence and will go to any lengths to manipulate the environment so that the man is not displeased -These women often have severe stress reactions and exhibit a wide range of physical and mental symptoms, including breakdowns |
In your statement, you talk about something called "learned helplessness." Can you explain what that is? | -It was first recognized several years ago in experiments conducted by Dr. Samuel Michaels -He and his assistants placed dogs in cages and administered random electric shocks at varied intervals -It soon became apparent to the dogs that there was nothing they could do to escape the shocks -At first they tried to escape, but when they couldn't, they became passive and ceased any volunteer activities -When the doors were actually opened they had to be dragged through the openings -This experiment has been carried out with all types of animals, with the same results |
How does this "learned helplessness" theory apply to battered women? | -When a battered woman, whose every effort to please or avoid violence has resulted in a beating, then that woman begins to respond with extreme passivity -Repeated batterings, like electric shocks, decrease her motivation to respond -This is reinforced by the Loving Phase of the Battering Cycle, which the woman views as being the "true" state of her relationship, the violent episode being mere aberrations |
What other psychological effects can result from BWS? | -These battered women are also severely depressed women who have turned their increasing anger in on themselves because they feel they can't better control their lives or their mates or that they are so dependent-With each battering, the anger increases |
Is the perception and grasp of reality impaired in any way for someone suffering from BWS? | -Absolutely. Such women often attempt to deny reality, much in the same way a soldier in battle will tune out the violence and gore surrounding him so that he can continue to function properly -They also become numb to pain and situations where there is a potential for serious injury or death of either themselves or their husbands -One woman I interviewed, after she shot and killed her husband, told me she knew her husband would recover because the (4) bullet wounds in his head were not that severe. |
