Taxonomy

the branch of biology that names and groups organisms according to their characteristics and evolutionary history

Kingdom

Linnaeus's largest category. The two are animal and plant

Phylum

subset of a kingdom, in the animal kingdom

Division

subset of a kingdom, in the plant kingdom

Class

a subset of a phylum or division

Order

each subset within a class

Family

subset of an order

Genus

subset of a family

Species

the smallest grouping, contains only a single organism type

Species name

also called the scientific name; has 2 parts

Species identifier

the second part, usually a descriptive word

Binomial nomenclature

the system of two-part names

Varieties

further division of a subset of a species

Subspecies

varieties of animal species that occur in different geographical areas

Phylogeny

evolutionary history of an organism
