Agon | A formal debate which takes place between the chief characters in a Greek play, protagonist and antagonist, usually with the chorus acting as a judge |
Anagnorisis | The hero REALIZES his own flaw or error that has caused his reversal. This recognition always occurs too late for the hero to prevent or escape his reversal. |
Catharsis | Purging of emotions, a purification that brings about spiritual a renewal or release from tension. The emotional cleansing initiated by the tragic experience; for the character is its the recognition and acceptance of their error, for the audience, it is the sum total of the pity and fear created by the play. |
Chorus | 12 pr 15 actors that represent the general public. They speak/sing in unison and comment on the action of the characters. |
Hamartia | In spite of his good intentions, the hero makes a tragic error which causes his reversal. This error usually stems from a character flaw, often a character's hubris or ego. |

Stichomythia | when single lines of verse are spoken by alternate speakers, usually in the form of a verbal fencing match, indicating emotional intensity |
