What is the role of hormones in the 1st 6 weeks after conception? They allow genitalia to develop both internal and external. Everything is bipotential meaning it could either develop into female or male. Nature programs everyone female unless there is a testosterone peak the 7th week

Klinefelters syndrome extra x chromosome in men
have enlarged hips and breasts, often have gender identity problems
Stella Walsh syndrome an individual has both xx and xy chromosomes. named after olympic gold medalist
Turners Syndrome XO- there is a blank spot where a chromosome should be
never fully develop ovaries, dont usually have GI problems and identify female
Hermaphroditism rare- due to differentiation failure of primary gonads, both male and female genitalia develop in an individual
some extreme cases have ambiguous (cant tell either way) genitalia
pseudo hermaphroditism a person who has a proper set of gonads (either all male or female) but the exterior genitalia are either ambiguous or opposite
what causes pseudo hermaphroditism? AGS-adrenalgenital syndrome; adrenal glands secrete too much masculinizing hormones during development (internal normal, genitalia hard to tell)
Androgen insensitivity syndrome- testicles secrete normal amounts of testosterone,but tissues dont respond
Gender identity Disorder when a person's biological sexual characteristics do not match the person's mental idea of his or her gender.
what do most people with GID consider themselves as in reference to their GI? Most people consider themselves heterosexual to their gender identity. Ie a man with a female gender identity would be attracted to a man
transvestite someone who cross dresses for sexual arousal and has no gender identity issue-NOT the same as transgender
Transgender/transsexual an adult whose gender identity does not match their anatomical sex

Social learning Theory We learn our gender identity based on the attitudes and situations around us. Girls are reinforced for girly behavior, boys for masculine behavior
Social modeling theory behaviors are learned through imitation of and observation of same sex parent
cognitive development theory Our gender identity develops because infants are naturally curious and are seeking to attain information
Evolutionary/Sociobiological model reproductive pressures shape gender identity
ie; womens role develops based on what makes a good mother, a mans role develops based on what woman are looking for to preserve their lineage
