Troposphere The layer of the atmosphere which is closest to the Earth's surface.
Stratosphere The layer of Earth's atmosphere which is above the troposphere. This is where the ozone layer is found.
Ozone Layer The part of the stratosphere that protects the Earth from too much ultraviolet radiation.
Greenhouse Gases Gases that absorb heat energy from the Earth's surface.
Carbon Dioxide One of the most common greenhouse gases; It is let off when wood, coal, oil, and gas are burned.
Fossil Fuels These are formed over millions of years from the remains of dead organisms.
Chlorofluorocarbons (CFCs) A type of synthetic gas that breaks down the ozone layer.
Residence Time The amount of time that a particular substance remains in the atmosphere.
Methane A greenhouse gas with a short residence time. Natural sources include wetlands, oceans, and termites.
