blood spatter analysis | uses the shapes and sizes of blood drops to reconstruct the crime scene |
point of origin | the point in space where the blood spatter came from -- 3 dimensional |
angle of impact | the angle at which a blood droplet strikes a surface |
impact site | usually the point on the body that received the blow or applied force from which the blood was shed |
area of convergence | the location of the blood source determined by drawing lines from the various blood droplets to the point where they intersect -- 2 dimensional |
coagulation | the process of blood forming clots |
platelets | irregularly shaped, colorless bodies that are present in blood. Their sticky surface lets them form clots to stop bleeding |
plasma | yellow liquid component of blood in which the blood cells in whole blood would normally be suspended |
leukocytes | white blood cells |
clots | masses of blood and other contaminants caused through clotting mechanisms |
erythrocytes | red blood cells |
skeletonized stain | the pattern left when an object moves through partially dried stain. Removing part of the blood, but leaving the outline of the stain intact |
blowback/back spatter | blood that is directed back toward the source of energy |
contact stain | blood stains caused by contact between a wet blood-bearing surface and a second surface which may or may not have blood on it |
forward spatter | spatter associated with an exit wound |
cast off | blood that has been thrown from a secondary object |
A, B, AB, O | blood groups |
universal recipient | AB+ |
agglutination | the clumping of blood |
rh factor | protein substance present in the red blood cells of most people -- will determine if blood is + or - |
antigen | proteins found on the surface of red blood cells that determine blood type |
serology | the scientific study of blood serum |
anti-body | a protein produced by the body's immune system when it detects harmful substances |
universal donor | O- |
blood spatter | a random distribution of blood stains that vary in size and that may be produced by a variety of mechanisms |
spines | the pointed edges of a stain that radiate out to form the spatter |
sattellite spatter | small drops of blood that break off from the parent spatter when the parent droplet strikes a target surface |
parent drop | the droplet from which satellite spatter originated |
target | the surface where the blood ends up |
wipe | a non-blood bearing object moves through a wet blood stain, altering the appearance of the original stain |
transfer pattern | the pattern created when a wet, bloody object touches something |
void | a pattern that helps to place an object or body in the scene; normally the area in question lacks blood even through areas surrounding it show blood |
swipe | wet blood transferred to a surface which did not have blood on it |
splash | pattern created when a volume of blood in excess of 1 mL strikes a surface at a low to medium velocity |
projected blood | blood under pressure that strikes a target |
expiratory blood | blood which is spattered onto a target, as a result of breathing; usually this occurs when an injury is to the throat, mouth, or airway |
arterial spurt | large patterns created under pressure, but with less volume and usually more distinctive evidence of blood pressure rising and falling |
drop patterns | characteristic patterns present when blood drips into standing, wet blood |
arterial gushing | the large patterns of blood that are created when blood escapes an artery under pressure; the increase and decrease in blood pressure is apparent |
