# Broggi Work, Power and Simple Machines

## 18 terms

### Work

the transfer of energy to an object when the force applied causes the object to move in the direction of the force W = force x distance

### Joule (J)

the unit of measure for work. equals 1 newton meter

### Power

the rate at which work is done or energy is transformed Power = work / time

### Watt (W)

the unit of measure for power. equals 1 Joule / second

### Machine

a device that helps do work(makes it easier) by either overcoming a force or changing the direction of the applied force

### work input

the work done on a machine
the product of input force x distance

### work output

the work done by a machine
the product of output force x distance

the number that tells you how many times the machine multiplies the input force

MA = output force/input force

### mechanical efficiency

a % that measures the ratio of work output to work input
ME = work output/work input X 100

### pulley

a machine with a grooved wheel holding a rope

### wheel and axle

a machine consisting of 2 circular objects of different sizes

### fulcrum

a fixed point on a lever

### lever

a machine that has a bar that pivots at a fixed point

### first class lever

a lever where the fulcrums between the input force and load

### second class lever

a lever where the load is between the input force and the fulcrum

### third class lever

a lever where the input force is between the fulcrum and the load

### compound machine

a machine that is made up of 2 or more simple machines

### inclined plane

a machine that is a straight, slanted surface
