| Exposition | The part of a plot that gives information about the characters, problems/ conflicts and setting |
| Rising Action | Plot events that complicate or further develop the characters' relationships and conflicts: must occur before the climax of the story |
| Climax | The "turning point" in conflict- the point of no return- often points to the theme of the story |
| Falling Action | The events in the story that occur after the climax and move the story to its resolution |
| Resoolution/ Denouement | "Wraps up" the conflicts in the story- way not resolve everything, howerver |
| Foreshadowing | The use of clues in a story to hint as events that will occur later in the plot |
| Suspense | Uncertainty or anxiety the reader feels about what is going to happen next in a story- foreshadowing often helps to add to the feeling of suspense in a stroy |
| Internal Conflict | Problems that occur within a character, such as making a difficult decision, deciding between right/wrong, etc. |
| External Conflict | Problems that occur between one character and and another character/ event/ force, such as boyfriend/girlfriend argument, a fistfight, or a person's attempt to climb a moutain |
| Linear Plot | When the events in a plot are told sequentially, without interruption or rearrangement |
| Flashback | When an event in a plot interrupts the present action of that plot to flash backword abd tell what happend at an earler time |
| Theme | The lesson that a story teaches- often hited at the climax/ resolution of a plot; |
