Definitions

Allusion Detail or moment in a work. One work makes reference to another, to history events, mythology, the Bible, etc.
Antagonist the character that opposes the protagonist
Caricature a portrayal of a few exaggerated traits
Round Character many traits, well-developed

Flat Character only have one trait or characteristic

Dynamic Character character changes in story)

Static Character stays the same during the whole book
Climax the decisive moment in a novel or play
Internal Conflict a struggle between opposing needs, desires, or emotions within a single character
External Conflict a problem or struggle between a character and someone or something outside of the character
Denouement the final resolution of the main complication of a literary or dramatic work
Dialogue a literary composition in the form of a conversation between two people
Exposition introduces the characters, setting, and basic situation
Falling action events after the climax, leading to the resolution
Figurative language metaphors and similes
Any time when the author is speaking in a way that's not literal.
Foil A person who is similar to another character, but has a key difference. Purpose of it is to point out the flaws of the other person. Ex: Banquo and Macbeth, Jack and Ralph
Genre a way of categorizing literature by technique or topic.
Imagery The use of language to evoke a picture or a concrete sensation of a person, thing, place, or experience
verbal irony when someone says something but means the oppostie
dramatic irony When the audience knows something the characters do not

Metaphor a figure of speech in which an expression is used to refer to something that it does not literally denote in order to suggest a similarity

3rd Person Objective (Camera's Eye View)- The narrator knows events but not thoughts of other characters
3rd Person Limited Omniscient When the narrator knows one character's thought or or is "inside" one character's head ( i.e Harry Potter)
3rd Person Omniscient When the narrator is inside more than one character's head ( i.e Lord of the Flies)
Protagonist Main character of the story
Rising action the series of conflicts or struggles that build a story toward a climax.
sarcasm witty language used to convey insults or scorn
Satire literature in which vices, flaws, wrongdoings and shortcomings of something in society are help up with the intent of shaming that thing and motivating the audience to improve. Often darkly humorous and sarcastic.
Setting arrangement of scenery and properties to represent the place where a story is set
Tone Author's attitude towards the subject and possibly towards the narrator
Voice he actual words used by the narrator that help convey tone, sometimes called "diction"
The way the narrator would sound if the story were read aloud.
