Sources of stress - control
lack of control = more stress.
Marmot et al (control)
7000 people over 5 years. Civil servants. Questionnaires about blood pressure, workload, their jobs in general etc. Symptoms of CHD + cardiovascular disease measured. People who had high pressure jobs didn't show any increased risk of cardiovascular disease or CHD. Having low control in a job made people 4 times more likely to die of a heart attack and much more likely to have cardiovascular disease or CHD.
GOOD: BIG SAMPLE, LONGITUDINAL, SCIENTIFIC
BAD: DON'T KNOW HEALTH BEHAVIOURS, ONLY A CERTAIN TYPE OF JOB
Sources of stress - workload
workload is v high in the UK. 12-13 hour shifts, overtime - paid/unpaid because either work is not done or they need more money.
Masahiro Irie (workload)
27 male 27 female. Blood test to look for damaged DNA. People who didn't drink or smoke. Males = no relationship between workload and damaged DNA. Women = high relationship between workload and damaged DNA.
GOOD: SCIENTIFIC, ECOLOGICALLY VALID, CONTROLLED HEALTH BEHAVIOURS
BAD:SMALL SAMPLE SIZE, PEOPLE WHO DON'T DRINK OR SMOKE AT ALL MIGHT NOT BE GENERALISABLE.
