Stare decisis	Doctrine requiring lower courts to adhere to existing case law in making decisions
Procedural Law	Group of laws defining the methods for enforcing legal rights and decisions
Laws	Enforceable rules of conduct in a society
Common Law	Law based on the customs of a group
Ordinances	Legislative enactments by a city
Administrative agency	Government body (entity) formed to carry out particular laws
Criminal Law	Group of laws defining and setting punishments for offenses against society
Equity	Basic fairness
Jurisdiction	Power of a court to decide a case
Unconstitutional	Status of a law that conflicts with a constitution and which is therefore invalid
Statutes	Laws enacted by state legislatures or federal legislatures
Case Law	Law made when an appellate court endorses a rule to be used in deciding court cases
Substantive Laws	Group of laws that defines rights and duties
Code	Laws grouped into and organized form
positive law	Law dictated by a sovereign or other central authority
constitutional law	Laws created when constitutions are adopted or amended
Case Law	Laws created by the judicial branch of government
Crime	An offense against society
Business Law	Laws that apply to business transactions
Tort	Private wrongs against people or organizations
