| Fader | A control which varies the gain of a channel on the console, thereby determining the level of the signal in that channel. |

| Level | The amount of signal strength going through a piece of audio equipment. |
| Line in/out | Specific inputs and outputs designed only to take or put out Line Level Audio (machine to machine). |
| Loose | Overly long pauses between edits. |
| Master Fader | The fader which controls the main output(s) of the Console. |
| Mic Level | The very low audio voltage level that comes out of a studio microphone. |
| Microphone | A transducer which converts sound pressure waves into electrical signals. |
| Mic. Input | An input on an audio device designed only to take the output from a microphone. |

| Mini-Disc Recorder | A digital record/playback system developed by Sony using a small silver disc. |
| Mixer Board/ Mixer | A device that mixes a different number of audio sources into one audio signal. |
| Mp3 | An audio format for computers that compresses audio (making the files smaller). |
| Nat. Sound | The natural sound that the microphone picks up, surrounding an event. |
| Noise | Any unwanted sound other than the signal. Examples include tape hiss, electronic noise generated by amplifier circuits, earth loop induced hum, and random hums, hiss and spurious electronic clicks and pops (e.g. from static electricity on vinyl records). |

| Pots | Short for potentiometer. The device used to provide volume level setting. (Volume Control) |
| Production | Creating audio or video projects. |
| Promo | Short for promotional. |
| Proximity Effect | In directional microphones, the boost in the microphone's output for bass frequencies as the mic is moved closer to the sound source. |
| Sampling Rate | Number of samples or snapshots taken of a particular signal in a given amount of time (usually one second). |
| Script | The text of your package which you read from. |
| Segue | A transition from one story or subject to another. |
| Source | The originating point of an audio signal. In journalism the originating point of information. |
| Speaker | A device that changes electrical signals to sound which can be heard. A transducer changing the electrical audio signal into a sound pressure wave. |
| Trim Control | A device that reduces the signal strength on a console. This device is normally pre-fader and found at the top of the console. |
| Tease | Promoting an upcoming news story or event by giving the audience a little "taste" of what they are going to hear or see. |
| Telephone Interface | A device to interface an audio console with a telephone system. |
| Tight | Very short spaces between edit points. |
