Abdicate To give up power, duty, or obligations
Allies the alliance of nations that fought the Axis in World War II and which signed the charter of the United Nations in 1945
Armaments Military weapons and supplies
Armistice a state of peace agreed to between opponents so they can discuss peace terms
Atomic Energy the energy released by a nuclear reaction
Capitalism an economic system based on private property and free enterprise
Cold War A conflict that was between the US and the Soviet Union. The nations never directly confronted eachother on the battlefield but deadly threats went on for years.
Collective/Collectivization policy pursued under Stalin between 1928 and 1940. The goal of this policy was to consolidate individual land and labour into collective farms
Communism A political and economic system where factors of production are collectively owned and directed by the state.

Decolonization the action of changing from colonial to independent status
Deposed A term that refers to a political leader who has been removed from power.

Doctrine a belief (or system of beliefs) accepted as authoritative by some group or school
Egalitarian A person who believes in the equality of all people
Ethnic Cleansing the mass expulsion and killing of one ethic or religious group in an area by another ethnic or religious group in that area
Exodus a journey by a large group to escape from a hostile environment
Fascism a political system headed by a dictator that calls for extreme nationalism and no tolerance of opposition
First World the relatively wealthy industrialized countries that share a commitment to varying forms of democratic political institutions and developed market economies
Front Line the line along which opposing armies face each other
Globalization The trend toward increased cultural and economic connectedness between people, businesses, and organizations throughout the world.
Global Warming an increase in the average temperature of the earth's atmosphere.
Guerilla a member of an irregular armed force that fights a stronger force by sabotage and harassment
Intervention act of coming between to solve a problem
Isolationism a policy of nonparticipation in international economic and political relations
Jihad a holy struggle or striving by a Muslim for a moral or spiritual or political goal
Legislature persons who make or amend or repeal laws
Liberal showing or characterized by broad-mindedness

Nuclear (weapons) deriving destructive energy from the release of atomic energy
Radical (used of opinions and actions) far beyond the norm
Recession the state of the economy declines
Reform a change for the better as a result of correcting abuses
Reparations payment for damages after a war
Revolution the overthrow of a government by those who are governed
Rivalry the act of competing as for profit or a prize
Secular worldly; not religious; temporal
Sectarian a member of a sect
Terrorism the use of violence by groups against civilians to achieve a political goal
Third World underdeveloped and developing countries of Asia and Africa and Latin America collectively
Totalitarian characterized by a government in which the political authority exercises absolute and centralized control
Westernization assimilation of Western culture
