Diocletian
(284-305 AD), Roman emperor who tried to solve the probelm of succession, established tetrarchy or "rule of four", each emperor rule over a quarter of empire
tetrarchy: rule of 4 established by Diocletian, 2 Augustus' & 2 Caesars' → split between East and west Rome, Aug → Caesar, didn't work b/c Augustus/ never wanted to step down. Only Emperor to willingly give up his power. Good emperor but not in the Christian's book.

Donation of Constantine will of constantine, bequeathed all Western empire to Roman Catholic church, Western-Latin, Eastern-Greek, West became weaker-Goths hired mercenaries to Roman army and many Germanics flooded into Rome, tensions arose
476 AD Fall of Roman empire, Odoacer defeated Romulus (last Roman king), Western empire ceased to exist but many Roman institutions assimilated into Roman Catholic church
Odoacer Vandal pirate king who defeated last Roman emperor and ended Roman empire
Romulus Augustulus Last Roman king
Charlemagne 1st Holy Roman Emperor
800 AD Coronation of 1st Holy Roman Emperor (Charlemagne), started using donation of constantine, strife grew between emperors and popes, Italy divided into kingdoms
