force

A push or pull

force formula

Force = Mass x Acceleration. The is measured in units called Newtons (N). AKA 1N = 1kg x 1m/s² (p.45)

torque

A force that produces or tends to produce rotation or torsion.(Moment Nm)

Newton (N)

metric unit used to measure force

spring scale

calibrated in newtons measures weight or force in calibrated in grammes to measure mass

a lever

is a rigid structure that can move around a fixed point called a fulcrum

moment of a force

is equal to the force multiplied by the perpendicular distance between the force and the fulcrum.

mechanical advantage

Number of times a machine multiplies the effort force

Advantage

A gain in effort or distance or a change of direction resulting from the use of a simple machine

class 1 lever

A lever in which the fulcrum is between the load and the effort.

class 2 lever

A lever in which the load is between the fulcrum and the effort.

class 3 lever

A lever in which the effort is between the fulcrum and the load

effort

The force applied to move a load using a simple machine

fulcrum

the fixed point about which a lever arm pivots

lever or lever arm

A beam, free to pivot around a point, used to move a load.

load

The weight or resistance that is moved using a simple machine.

simple machine

any of the six elementary devices(including levers and pulleys,wedges screw inclined plane wheel and axil) that provide mechanical or other advantage

Class 3

What class of lever is this diagram?

Class 1

What class of lever is this diagram?

Class 2

What class of lever is this diagram?

Class 1 fulcrum in the middle

What class of lever is this simple machine?

Class 2 load in the middle

What class of lever is this simple machine?

Class 3 effort in the middle

What class of lever is this simple machine?

"the one in the middle"

classes of levers are found by identifying this section of the lever system

torque wrench

used when a specific force must be applied to a nut or bolt head.
deflecting beam, dial indicating, and micrometer, slipes when a specific level of tightness is reached preventing overtightness

center of gravity

The point at the center of an object's weight distribution, where the force of gravity can be considered to act.

equilibrium

a state of balance or equality between opposing forces resultant net force zero

stable equilibrium

the state of an object balanced so that any small displacement or rotation raises its center of gravity, causing it to return to its origional position eg a half full bottle standing on its base

unstable equilibrium

the state of an object balanced so that any small displacement or rotation lowers its center of gravity eg bottle standing on its neck

neutral equilibrium

the state of an object balanced so that any small movement neither raises nor lowers its center of gravity eg rolling bottle on a flat surface.

law of the lever

When balanced, the sum of the clockwise moments equal to the sum of the anticlockwise moments

method used to increase stability

-make the base wide
-lower the centre of gravity

top heavy objects have ______________________ making them unstable

a high center of gravity

formula 1 cars have a low C.G. and a _____________________ making them stable

wide base

A double decker bus has to be filled from the bottom up to___________________stability

maintain

a tight rope walker

___________________________ uses a heavy pole to keep C.G over their narrow base thereby maintaining stability
