Anemia is due to what?
1. Increase in destruction
2. increase in blood loss
3. Decrease in amount of production
What the difference in regenerative and non-regenerative anemia
Regenerative anemia- indicates that the body is responding to the decrease in RBC in the body (GOOD)
Non-regenerative- indicate the the body is NOT responding to the decrease in RBC in the body (BAD)
What is a reticulocyte?
A young anucleated erythrocyte (RBC)
What species dont release reticulocytes into the peripheral blood?
What is the steps to performing a retic. count?
mix = amount of whole blood and NMB
allow to stand for 10-15 min
perform a blood smear
count the # of retic.'s in 10 100x
divide the # by 1000 x 100 = % of retic.'s
Normal reticulocyte vaules for a dog?
normal aggregate reiculocyte vaules for a cat?
normal punctate reticulocyte vaules for a cat?
more than 10%
only count which type of reticulocyte in cats? Why?
the agrregate reticulocyte because it will show if the cat is regenerative or not.
3 ways to classify anemia
1. morphology (description of the RBC
3. regenerative and non-regenerative
which stage of erythorocytes do you see nRBC's
If a signigficant amount of nRBC's are seen it is called a _______________anemia?
