Select All Define achievement tests A test designed to assess what a person has learned Define aptitude tests A test designed to predict a person's future performance; aptitude is the capacity to learn Define Wechsler Adult Intelligence Scale (WAIS) The WAIS is the most widely used intelligence test; contains verbal and performance (nonverbal) subtests. Distinguish between achievement and aptitude. Achievement and aptitude may actually influence each other, and the lines between them are not so clear cut. Info on the WAIS. Consists of 11 subtests broken into verbal and performance area. It yields not only an overall intelligence score, but also separate scores. Can be used to show learning disabilities. Define Standardization Defining meaningful scores by comparison with the performance of a pretested group Define normal curve The symmetrical bell-shaped curve that describes the distribution of many physical and psychological attributes. Most scores fall near the average, and fewer and fewer scores lie near the extremes. Info on standardization... Researchers will test a similar group of people to get a base line 'average' for the test. This is so that your score can be compared with the samples. What is the Flynn Effect A rising performance or intelligence increase as a group Define reliability The extent to which a test yields consistent results, assessed by the consistency of scores on two halves of the test, or on retesting. Define Validity The extent to which the measures or predicts what it is supposed to. Info on validity and reliability.. A test may be reliable (e.g., produce the same scores over and over), but it may not be valid because it isn't predicting anything that it is supposed to. Define content validity The extent to which a test samples the behavior that is of interest Define predictive validity The success with which a test predicts the behavior it is designed to predict; it is assessed by computing the correlation between test scores and the criterion behavior. Info on correlations changing as we go up in the academic ladder. As the range of intelligence gets smaller and smaller (because the higher the grade, the more intelligent people tend to be), the correlation gets less and less strong. *The narrower the range, the lower the predictive power of intelligence becomes.
