Description

Negative tú commands are very different from affirmative tú commands. While the affirmative commands from the previous lesson used the 3rd person present, negative commands use the second person subjunctive.

The first thing you need to know about the subjunctive is that you find the stem of the verbs differently. The rule is:

Conjugate the verb to the present indicative first person singular, and remove the -o. So the stem for comer is como minus the o = com-.

The stem is usually the same in the subjunctive, but verbs that are stem changers, spelling changers (GO verbs for example) or irregular will have different stems e.g

Salir -> Salgo -> Salg-

Salg- is the stem to be used for the subjunctive, so to say "don't leave" informally is "no salgas".

This brings us to how to conjugate: basically for AR verbs you switch the "a" in the ending for an "e" and vice cersa, meaning you use an "a" for ER and IR verbs. Very simple.
