| PFD's | personal flotation equipment must be worn, properly, at all times |
| buddy system | everyone must have a buddy, and it is good for their to be buddy canoes whilst canoeing |
| skill proficiency | how well everyone can do certain things |
| planning | the trip leaders must plan for the event, taking in every possible problem |
| equipment | you must have the proper supplies for a safe trip afloat, and whatever else is being planned as well |
| discipline | the trip leaders must be able to control and command their scouts at all times |
