Definitions

weather the condition of Earth's atmosphere at a particular time and place
air made up of molecules that are moving randomly, even when there's no wind.
wind vane measures wind direction;
has an arrow that points in the direction from which the wind is blowing
wind stock a weather instrument measures wind speed;
has one open end that catches the wind, causing the stock to point in the direction towards which the wind is blowing.
anemometers measures windspeed;
have rotating cups that spin faster when the wind is strong
humidity the amount of water vapor in the air
relative humidity a measure of the amount of water vapor present in the air compared to the amount needed for saturation at a specific temperature
dew point the temperature at which the water vapor in the air becomes saturated and condensation begins
clouds form when moist air is lifted and cools. This occurs where air is heated, and where cold air meets warm air.
fog A stratus cloud that forms when air is cooled to its dew point near the ground.
precipitation water that falls to Earth's surface as rain, snow, sleet, or hail
air mass large body of air that has the same properties similar to the part of earth's surface over which it developes
front a boundry between two air masses of different density, moisture, or tempurature
cold front occurs when colder air advances toward warm air
warm front occurs when lighter, warmer air advances over hevier, colder air
occluded front a front where a warm air mass is caught between two colder air masses and brings cool temperatures and large amounts of rain and snow.
hurricane a large, swirling, lowpressure, powerful windstorm that forms over warm ocean waters
blizzard winter storm that lasts least 3 hours with temperture of -12C or below poor visibilty and wind at least 51 km/h
meteorologist a person who studies the weather
station model shows the weather conditions at a specific location on Earth's surface using symbols
isotherm line drawn on a weather map that connects points having equal temperature
isobar a line drawn to connect points of equal atmospheric pressure
