Iron Curtain | Winston Churchill's term for the Cold War division between the Soviet-dominated East and the U.S.-dominated West. |
Berlin | Capital city of Germany and site of a great deal of tension during the Cold War |
Superpower | Nations with enough military, political, and economic strength to influence events in many areas around the globe. |
Satellites | Nations that are politically and economically dominated or controlled by, another more powerful country. |
Containment | American policy of resisting further expansion of communism around the world. |
The Truman Doctrine | An American policy that stated that communism must be contained to where it is, and that the United States would support nations resisting communism with military and economic support. |
The Marshall Plan | An American plan that was created to provide food and economic assistance to any European country that needed help to recover from World War II. |
Berlin Blockade | The blockade was a Soviet attempt to starve out the allies in Berlin in order to gain control of the entire city. |
Berlin Airlift | This was a joint effort by the US and Britian to fly food and supplies into West Berlin after the Soviet blocked off all ground routes into the city. It lasted 11 months and carried 2.3 million tons of supplies into the city. |
West Germany | A democratic nation in north central Europe on the North Sea. Created after the merger of the America, French, and British occupation zones in Germany after World War II. |
East Germany | A communist nation in north central Europe on the Baltic Sea. Created from the Soviet occupation zone of Germany after World War II. |
Berlin Wall | A wall separating East and West Berlin built by East Germany in 1961 to keep citizens from escaping to the West. It was torn down in 1989. |
North Atlantic Treaty Organization | An international organization created in 1949 by the North Atlantic Treaty for purposes of collective security. |
Warsaw Pact | An alliance between the Soviet Union and other Eastern European nations. This was created in response to NATO. |
Mutually Assured Destruction | A doctrine of nuclear war which stated that both sides in a potential conflict had great enough forces to nearly guarantee the destruction of both sides in the event of nuclear war. MAD. |
Arms Race | A competition between nations to have the most powerful armaments. |
Sputnik | The world's first space satellite. |
Space Race | A competition of space exploration between the United States and Soviet Union that occurred during the Cold War. |
Proxy War | A war instigated by a major power that does not itself participate, instead relying on others to do the majority of the fighting. |
