List some Internal ways to take herbal medicine: Infusion (hot or cold), Decoction (root/bark/twigs), tincture, fluid extract, tablet, gargle, nasal spray, inhalation, lozenge, powder, Succus, IV
What is an Oxymel and what is it used for? A sweet tasting liquid used to improve client compliance.
Has an anti-microbial action, a mild expectorant, acts as a demulcent
Contains vinegar and honey.
The main herb used is garlic which is great for upper respiratory tract infections.
Shelf life 3 months.
What is Syrup and what is it used for? Used for irritated mucus membranes of the upper respiratory tract.
Which herbs would be most beneficial to use for syrups? Marshmallow root, Raspberry, Rosehip, ,Sundew, Wild cherry (antitussive agent)
Name two disadvantages and advantages of herbal syrups? Disadvantage: 1. Exploding bottles (fermentation),
2. Crystallisation of the sugar in the syrup if its kept in the fridge.
Advantages: 1. No alcohol in syrups
2. its beneficial for clients with taste issue e.g. children
Describe lozenges They look like tablets but dissolve slowly in the mouth. Used to soothe an irritated throat ,sore mouth or voice strain. Ginger, liquorice, thyme, golden seal are some herbs that can be in a lozenge.
What is a pastille? Similar to a lozenge but are soft and chewy. Made with water herb, glycerine, gelatine (or plant option) Some herbs go well e.g.: liquorice, blackcurrant, thyme, lemon
What is a Gargle and What condition would it be used for? Main actions are: Demulcent, Astringent, Antiseptic. Useful for inflamed or damaged mucus membrane in the mouth or throat. eg. Tonsillitis, mouth ulcer, Gingivitis, sore tongue.
What are suppositories? A bullet shaped mix of herbs.(aqueous or fatty) once cooled in the fridge the solid is inserted into the anus. Used for conditions like Haemorrhoids.
What are Pessaries? Used for the Vagina for local inflammation or infection. A solid mould mixed with herbs and a medium.
What is a douche used for? Are used to Irrigate the vagina. Used for local irritation, inflammation and infection.
