Describe lozenges | They look like tablets but dissolve slowly in the mouth. Used to soothe an irritated throat ,sore mouth or voice strain. Ginger, liquorice, thyme, golden seal are some herbs that can be in a lozenge. |
What is a pastille? | Similar to a lozenge but are soft and chewy. Made with water herb, glycerine, gelatine (or plant option) Some herbs go well e.g.: liquorice, blackcurrant, thyme, lemon |
What is a Gargle and What condition would it be used for? | Main actions are: Demulcent, Astringent, Antiseptic. Useful for inflamed or damaged mucus membrane in the mouth or throat. eg. Tonsillitis, mouth ulcer, Gingivitis, sore tongue. |
What are suppositories? | A bullet shaped mix of herbs.(aqueous or fatty) once cooled in the fridge the solid is inserted into the anus. Used for conditions like Haemorrhoids. |
What are Pessaries? | Used for the Vagina for local inflammation or infection. A solid mould mixed with herbs and a medium. |
What is a douche used for? | Are used to Irrigate the vagina. Used for local irritation, inflammation and infection. |
