|Free Soil Party|| New party that nominated Martin Van Buren for president.|
Formed because neither Democrates or Republicans would take a stand on SLAVERY.
Free Soil, Free Speech, Free Labor & Free Men.
|Provisions of Missouri Compromise|| 1. It admitted Maine as a free state |
2. It admitted Missouri as a slave state
3. It established the 36/30 degree line which stated that any state ABOVE the line would be FREE and any state BELOW it will be SLAVE.
|Wilmot Proviso|| David Wilmot introduced this that slavery should be PROHIBITED in any lands that might be acquired by MEXICO.|
(Southerners protested this furiously!)
|Calhoun's Proposal||John Calhoun's stated that neither Congress or any territorial government had NO AUTHORITY to BAN slavery from a territory or regulate it in any way.|

|Popular Sovereignty||Allowing the PEOPLE to decide.|
|Border Ruffians||Missourians that traveled in armed groups.|
|Civil War||Conflict between the citizens of the SAME COUNTRY.|
|Fugitive Slave Act|| 1850, Required all citizens to hel catch runaways.|
Anyone who aided a fugitive could be fined or imprisoned.
|Kansas-Nebraska Act|| Created the territories of Kansas and Nebraska. Opened new lands for settlement, and had the effect of REPEALING the Missouri Compromise of 1820.|
(By allowing settlers in those territories to determine through Popular Sovereignty whether they would allow slavery within each territory.)
