Civilization A society with a high level of culture and social organization
Democracy A form of government in which every person has the free and equal right to participate; often practiced by electing representatives of the people, by the people
Dictatorship A form of government in which the ruler is an absolute authority (not restricted by a constitution or laws or opposition
Monarchy A form of government in which supreme power is held by a single person who usually inherits authority for a lifetime
Republic A form of government in which people elect representatives to exercise power for them
Arts Beautiful or thought-provoking works produced through creative activity such as painting, music, or writing
Competition Doing something with the goal of outperforming others or winning something Ex. campaigning to win an election
Compromise An agreement to settle differences in which each side agrees to give up part of its demands
Customs Long-established practices or traditional ways of behaving that people pass down from one generation to another Ex. shaking hands in greeting
Ethnic Relating to a group in society that shares distinct cultural traits such as race, language, or religion
Perspectives Different points of view based on your experiences and beliefs
Capital Goods Materials that are used in the production of other materials rather than being sold to consumers Ex. computers and machines used in an assembly line
Consumption Purchasing and using goods and services
Distribution Getting goods (objects people want and need) and services (actions that people want and need) form the producer to the consumer
Human Resources All the people who work in a business or organization; the personnel
Natural Resources Materials provided by nature that can be used to produce goods or to provide services Ex. oil, wood
Production The process of manufacturing, making, or creating a product for sale
Scarcity The lack of needed resources
Technology Using science to produce useful things
Database A collection of related information stored in a computer and organized for convenient access
Irrigation A supply of water brought to a dry area, especially in order to help crops grow
Migration Movement from one place to another, such as from one region or country to another
Capitalism An economic system based on the private ownership of companies, and distribution of goods in a free competitive market for profit
Classical Relating to ancient Greek or Rome or their culture
Empires A group of nations, territories or peoples ruled by a single authority
Feudalism A legal and social system that existed in medieval Europe, in which men called vassals or lieges entered into a mutual obligation with a lord (usually for military support and mutual protection) and the lord granted them land
Gender Male or female
Middle Ages The period in European history between the end of the Roman Empire in the 5th century and the Italian Renaissance in early 15th century; "medieval" refers to this time period
Nation State An independent state recognized by and able to interact with other states, especially one composed of people who are of one nationality
Neolithic The latest period of the Stone Age, between about 8000 BC and 5000 BC; characterized by the development of settled agriculture and the use of polished stone tools and weapons; "neo" means old and "lithic" means stone
Paleolithic The early part of the Stone Age, when early human beings made chipped-stone tools; from 750,000 to 15,000 years ago; "paleo" means old and "lithic" means stone
Primary Source A first-hand account of an event, or an artifact created during the period of history that is being studied Ex. diaries, photographs
Secondary Source An account of the past written by someone who was not alive at that time Ex. textbooks, encyclopedias
Trade Association An organization formed to represent the collective interests of a number of businesses in the same trade
