Definitions

Locomotion The controlled act of moving a body as a whole from one place to another
Locomotive Control Controls limb and body movements, speed, steering, posture, and orientation in space
Walking: Stance Phase Locomotor movement cycle of one leg, starting when it makes contact with the ground and ending when it breaks contact with the ground
Walking: Swing Phase Locomotor movement cycle of one leg during which no part of the foot is in contact with the ground
Walking: Stride One movement cycle of a single leg consisting of both a swing and stance phase
Walking: Double Support Phase Phase in which two feet are in the stance phase concurrently
Running: Flight Periods A phase in running in which neither foot is in the stance phase. Replaces the double support phase in walking
Gaits Limbs in locomotion
Antiphase The gait pattern in walking and running
Inphase The gait pattern in hopping
Gait Patterns Help quantitatively measure gait; stride length, width, time and rate
Locomotion Energetics Exploits physiology to keep energy costs low: Pendulum movement of leg keeps neuromuscular control at a minimum - no continuous control necessary
Specific Cost of Transport Energy Consumed / (weight * distance traveled)
