Definitions

Heart the hollow muscular organ located behind the sternum and between the lungs
Arteries blood vessels that carry blood away from the heart
Veins blood vessels that carry waste containing blood from the tissues back to the heart
Capillaries the smallest blood vessels which connect the smallest arteries with the smallest veins. Nourishment and fluid noramlly trapped in thick walled arteries and veins can easily pass through the delicate walls of the capillaries
Capillary Bed A network of capillaries that infiltrate every organ and tissue in the body.
Red Blood Cells blood cells containing hemoglobin that carry oxygen through the bloodstream
Kidneys two structures located on each side of the lumbar region that filter blood and secrete impurities, forming urine. Organs that filter nitrogen wastes from blood to make urine
Liver large and complicated reddish-brown glandular organ located in the upper right portion of the abdominal cavity
Nitrogenous Waste Waste products that contain nitrogen. These products, such as ammonia and urea, are produced during protein metabolism.
Valve a structure in a hollow organ (like the heart) with a flap to insure one-way flow of fluid through it
Chambers rooms, in the heart, large, hollow areas that recieve incoming blood from the lungs and tissues and ship it out again.
Plasma colorless watery fluid of blood and lymph containing no cells and in which erythrocytes and leukocytes and platelets are suspended
Platelets tiny, disk-shaped bodies in the blood, important in blood clot formation
White Blood Cells diease fighting cells in blood
Anemia a deficiency of red blood cells
Atria (Atrium) the two upper chambers of the heart- the receiving areas that pool incoming blood.
Ventricles the two lower chambers of the heart, and they pump blood out to the lungs and body.
Coronary Arteries blood vessels that branch from the aorta and carry oxygen-rich blood to the heart muscle
Blood Types classified according to the presence, or absence, of certain antigens; four major blood types are A, AB, B, and O
Blood Pressure the pressure that is exerted by the blood against the walls of blood vessels
Pulse the rhythmic contraction and expansion of the arteries with each beat of the heart
Heart Attack a condition in which blood flow to a part of the heart muscle is blocked, which causes heart cells to die.
Stroke a sudden loss of consciousness resulting when the rupture or occlusion of a blood vessel leads to oxygen lack in the brain
