Alliteration The repetition of a beginning consonant sound
Allusion A casual reference to someone or something in history or literature that creates a mental picture
Analogy The comparison of two things by explaining one to show how it is similar to the other
Assonance The repetition of vowel sounds
Ballad A type of poem that tells a story and was originally meant to be sung or recited
Couplet A rhymed pair of lines
Haiku A form of Japanese poetry in which 17 syllables are arranged in three lines of 5,7, and 5 syllables
Hyperbole Extreme exaggeration for effect
Limerick A five line poem written with one couplet and one triplet
