| Metric System | a system of measurement that is based on counting by 10's. A meter is the basic unit for length, a kilogram is the basic unit for mass, and a liter is the basic unit of liquid volume. This is the system that all scientists use. |
| Thermometer | a tool used for measuring temperature. |
| Balance | a tool for measuring mass. Also called a pan balance or scale. |
| Spring Scale | a tool for measuring force or weight. |
| Matter | anything that has mass and takes up space. |
| Atom | the smallest unit of an element that has all of the properties of that element. |
| Element | a substance made up of only one kind of atom. (example = gold) |
| Compound | a substance made of two or more elements. (example water/ H O) |
| Mass | the amount of matter in an object. |
| Volume | the amount of space an object takes up. |
| Density | the measure of how closely packed matter is in an abject. |
| Physical Change | change in a substance in size, shape, or form. |
| Chemical change | when substances become new substances without any characteristics of what they once were. Also known as a chemical reaction. |
| States of matter | the form that matter is in, such as, solid, liquid, or gas. |
| Solid | the state of matter that has a definite shape and size. |
| Liquid | a state of matter that takes the shape of the container it's in; It's volume is also definite. |
| Gas | a state of matter that spreads out to fill the available space. It doesn't have a definite shape or volume. |
| Freeze | a physical change in state from liquid to solid. |
| Melt | a physical change from a solid to a liquid. |
| Change of State | a physical change that occurs when matter changes from on state to another, such as from a liquid to a gas. |
| Mixture | a combination of two or more substances in which each substance keeps its original characteristics. |
| Solutions | one or more substance evenly dissolved in another substance. |
| Dissolve | to mix and form a solution with another substance. |
| Evaporate | to change from a liquid to a gas. |
