-The vice president becomes president if the office of president becomes vacant. The new president may nominate a new vice president. Also, if the president is unable to perform the duties of his office, the vice president may become "acting" president if the president or the vice president and a majority of the Cabinet informs Congress of his inability to perform his duties.
