Aquatic Life Zones | Pretty self explanatory, it's just places (or biomes) where the aquatic life dwell. |
Nekton | All organisms that swim actively in open water, independent of currents |
Benthos | Organisms that live attached to or near the ocean floor |
Euphotic Zone | Upper layer of a body of water through which sunlight can penetrate and support photosynthesis. |
Turbidity | Muddiness created by stirring up sediment or having foreign particles suspended (High turbidity, dirty water. Low turbidity, clean water). |
Coastal Zone | The warm, nutrient-rich, shallow water that extends from the high-tide mark on land to the gently sloping, shallow ledge of the continental shelf |
Intertidal Zone | The portion of the shoreline that lies between the high and low tide lines |
Open Sea | The vast volume of the ocean that lies beyond the continental shelf |
Oligotrophic Lake | Aquatic environment (usually a lake) that contains scarce amounts of nutrients and organic matter |
Eutrophic Lake | Lake with a large or excessive supply of plant nutrients, mostly nitrates and phosphates. |
Mesotrophic Lake | A lake whose nutrient levels often fall somewhere in between the two extremes. |
Inland Wetland | Land away from the coast, such as a swamp, marsh, or bog, that is covered all or part of the time with fresh water. |
Littoral Zone | A shallow zone in a freshwater habitat where light reaches the bottom and nurtures plants |
Limnetic Zone | The area in a freshwater habitat that is away from the shore but still close to the surface |
