Apnea Cessation of breathing during sleep
Carbon Dioxide A gas that is expelled from the body by the respiratory system
Oxygen A gas that is brought into the body by the respiratory system
Atelectasis Lung collapse
Bronchodilate To open up the airways
Chronic Obstructive Pulmonary Disease (COPD) A chronic disease of the airways such as emphysema
Nasal Cannula A disease used to provide low-flow oxygen therapy. It carries supplementary oxygen through small-diameter flexible plastic tubing. the tubing has two short extensions that are inserted into the nostrils
Oxygen Toxicity A serious, even life-threatening condition that occurs if too much oxygen is delivered for too long a period of time.
Pulse Oximeter A device that measure how saturate, or filled, the red blood cells are with oxygen
Side Effect Any effect that is produced by a drug that is not the desired effect. The two types of these are local and systemic
Simple Mask A reservoir of oxygen. It is designed to fit over a client's nose and mouth
The American Association of Respiratory Care (AARC) A professional society for respiratory therapists in hospitals and home care companies, managers of respiratory and cardio-pulmonary services, and educators who provide respiratory care training
