Axle

A shaft on which a wheel rotates.

Block and Tackle

Pulley blocks with associated rope or cable.

A lever in which the fulcrum is between the load and the effort.

Class 2 Lever

A lever in which the load is between the fulcrum and the effort.

Class 3 Lever

A lever in which the effort is between the fulcrum and the load

A machine made of more than one simple machine.

Efficiency

The ratio of the output to the input of any system.

Force

Force into or from an action or state, either physically or metaphorically.

Helix

A structure consisting of something wound in a continuous series of loops.

Inclined Plane

A simple machine for elevating objects.

Lever

A rigid bar pivoted about a fulcrum.

Linear Motion

Movement in a straight line.

Any mechanical or electrical device that transmits or modifies energy to perform or assist in the performance of human tasks.

Mechanical Advantage

The ratio of the force exerted by a machine to the force applied to it.

Mechanism

The technical aspects of doing something.

Motion

The act of changing location from one place to another.

Oscillating Motion

A back-and-forth movement that goes between two points; to vibrate.

Pulley

A simple machine consisting of a wheel with a groove in which a rope can run to change the direction or point of application of a force applied to the rope.

Reciprocal Motion

Ability to reverse movement between opposing muscle groups.

Rotary Motion

The act of rotating as if on an axis.

Screw

A simple machine of the inclined-plane type consisting of a spirally threaded cylindrical rod that engages with a similarly threaded hole.

Simple Machine

A device for overcoming resistance at one point by applying force at some other point.

Wedge

Something solid that is usable as an inclined plane (shaped like a V) that can be pushed between two things to separate them.

Wheel

A simple machine consisting of a circular frame with spokes (or a solid disc) that can rotate on a shaft or axle (as in vehicles or other machines)

Work

Activity directed toward making or doing something.

Fulcrum

The pivot about which a lever turns.
