Definitions

Heredity The passing of genetic traits from parents to offspring.
Characteristic A feature that has different forms in a population.
Trait The different forms of a characteristic, brown or red hair
Dominant Trait Trait observed in the first generation when parents that have different traits are bred. "Stronger of the two traits."
Recessive Trait Trait that seems to disappear when two alleles for the same trait are present. The weaker of the two traits.
Gene One set of instructions for an inherited trait.
Chromosome One of the structures in the nucleus that is made up of DNA and carries genetic information
Phenotype An organism's appearance or other detectable characteristic. (The way it looks.)
Genotype The entire genetic makeup of an organism: Also the combination of genes for one or more specific traits.
Probability The likelihood that a possible future event will occur in any given instance of the event.
Homozygous A plant with two dominant or two recessive alleles. Example- PP or pp.
Heterozygous A plant with one dominant and one recessive allele: Example Pp.
Ratio A relationship between two different numbers that is often expressed as a fraction. Example 3/4 or 3:4.
True Breeding When this plant self-pollinates all the offspring will have the same trait as the parent.
Cross Pollination (sexual reproduction) Process in which pollen from one plant fertilizes the ovule of a flower on a different plant
Self Pollination A plant that has both male and female reproductive structures. Pollen from one flower can fertilize the ovule of the same flower or the ovule of another flower on the same plant.
