Definitions

Turbidity A measure of how clear water is
pH A measure of how acidic or basic a substance is.
Bio-indicator Organisms that can exist in water supplies that are used assess ecosystem health.
Smoke pollution Exhaust from cars adds nitrates into the atmosphere that get caught in raindrops.
Heat pollution Hot water flows from a factory into a body of water and raises the temp.
Chemical pollution Fertilizer runoff contaminates rain water runoff.
Individual susceptibility How an organism responds to a particular chemical substance.
Dose Refers to the amount of a chemical substance that is introduced into an organism.
Potency Refers to how powerful and strong a chemical is.
Non-point source pollution Pollution that comes from a wide area rather than a specific source, like a farm or parking lot.
Point-source pollution Pollution that comes from a specific source, like a drain pipe or factory.
Density formula D=m/v
Sonar Uses sound waves to measure the depth of the ocean floor
Aquifer A rock layer that stores water and allows water to flow through it.
Respiration Ocean and land animals use this process to get energy, using oxygen and giving off carbon dioxide
Cohesion The tendency of a water molecule to stick to other water molecules
Universal Solvent Ability to dissolve many substances.
Surface tension Tightness across the surface of water that is caused by polar molecules pulling on each other.
Impermeable rock A rock layer that does not allow water to flow through it because of pores that are too small.
Age of earth 4.6 Billion
Eon Longest division of geologic time, measured in billions of years.
Bottom Where in rock layers you would find the oldest fossils.
Fossil The remains or traces of a living thing that has been preserved in rock.
Absolute age The exact age of a fossil or rock layer in years.
Relative age The age of a fossil or rock layer compared to the objects around it.
Transform boundary When two tectonic plates grind past each other.
Divergent boundary When two tectonic plates move away from each other.
Convergent boundary When two tectonic plates move toward each other.
Mechanical weathering The breaking down of rocks without changing the chemical composition of the rock.
Chemical weathering The breaking down of rocks involving a change in the chemical composition of the rock.
Fossil record The biological history of an area as recorded by fossils found in the area.
Puzzle evidence Evidence for continental drift that lines up the coastlines of different continents showing they once fit together.
Pangaea The supercontinent that began breaking up 200 million years ago.
Fossil evidence The discovery of fossils on different continents when the organisms could not have traveled the ocean.
Geologic evidence The discovery of rock features on different continents that suggest the continents once fit together.
Climatic evidence Example: the discovery of glacier remains on a tropical continent.
Chemical change When a chemical reaction changes the substance an object is made of. Ex. rusting.
Ductile The ability of a substance to be pulled into a wire without breaking. Ex: most metals.
Malleable The ability of a substance to be flattened into sheets without breaking. Ex. aluminum foil.
Physical change A change in a substance that does not change the composition of the substance. Ex. food coloring in icing.
Endothermic A chemical reaction that absorbs heat.
Exothermic A chemical reaction that gives off heat.
Atom The basic building blocks of all matter.
Cells All living things are made of these.
Proton The positively charged particle in the nucleus of an atom.
Electron The particle that orbits around the nucleus and contains a negative charge.
Neutron The particle in the nucleus of an atom that contains no charge.
Chemical any substance that has a definite composition
