Definitions

SIMPLE MACHINE one of the six basic types of machines, which are the basis for all other forms of machines
WORK force exerted on an object that causes it to move.
JOULE a unit of work equal to one newton-meter
VELOCITY the speed and direction of a moving object
ACCELERATION The rate at which velocity changes
INERTIA (physics) the tendency of a body to maintain is state of rest or uniform motion unless acted upon by an external force
NEWTON a unit of force equal to the force that imparts an acceleration of 1 m/sec/sec to a mass of 1 kilogram
ENERGY the ability to do work or cause change
LAW OF CONSERVATION OF ENERGY the law that states that energy cannot be created or destroyed but can be changed from one form to another
MATTER that which has mass and occupies space
ATOM (physics and chemistry) the smallest component of an element having the chemical properties of the element
COMPOUNDS substances formed by the joining of elements through chemical bonding. every molecule of a compound is the same.
ELEMENTS a molecule composed of one kind of atom; cannot be broken into simpler units by chemical reactions.
POTENTIAL ENERGY energy stored due to an object's position or arrangement
KINETIC ENERGY the mechanical energy that a body has by virtue of its motion
GRAVITY (physics) the force of attraction between all masses in the universe
FORCE a push or pull exerted on an object.
WAVES any disturbance that transmits energy through matter or space.
ELECTRICITY energy made available by the flow of electric charge through a conductor
ELECTRON negatively charged particle; located outside the atomic nucleus
PROTONS positively charged particles located in the nucleus
NEUTRONS These have no electrical charge, but add to the mass of the atom
TEMPERATURE the degree of hotness or coldness of a body or environment (corresponding to its molecular activity)
SCIENTIFIC METHOD a method of investigation involving observation and theory to test scientific hypotheses
