Attitude | %80 of the qualities of a leader. Includes Laughter, Exciting, Assertive, Disciplined, Enthusiastic, Responsive, Sensitive, Honesty, Integrity, Positive. This is more important than other past things. |
Communication | "Seeking first to understand and then to be understood." The most important leadership skill because "you are only worth what you give away". Leadership is measured by the capacity to bring knowledge to others. Pulls together the "four" cornerstones of leadership. Talk less, listen more-why do you have two ears and one mouth? |
Confidence | To be certain of your abilities. Developed through the practice of "doing it until you can't do it wrong," but when in doubt, "fake it." |
Dedication | To make a commitment to an organization, its members, and ideals. |
Discipline | Self discipline, having control over your attitudes and skill. Leading by example: "You can't lead others until you can lead yourself." |
Halftime | 20 minute interval between 2nd and 3rd quarters where the visiting band performs first. |
Honor | Attaining dignity and respect through your behavior and actions. |
Knowledge | Experience and facts. A leadership skill, "You can only give away what you've got." |
Leader | Someone who gets others to do something they normally wouldn't do. Leaders can be positive or negative. A good leader can be a teacher, mentor, or helper, and an official title is NOT needed. |
Paradigms | Your "mental road map," or ideas that you believe to be true. (Or are they? Dun dun dunnnn) |
Paradigm Shift | Often comes as an epiphany. A drastic change in your Paradigms usually caused by a greater awareness, knowledge, or increased Communication. |
Phasing | Not being together. Can refer to marching, music, or equipment work. |
Practice | The time to be most concerned with, the time to get work done, the time to make the most efficient use of. "As Ye Practice, So Ye Shall Perform." |
Pride | To display high esteem for yourself, your section, and your band; to be proud. |
Professionalism | The qualities which enable someone to handle any situation with confident control. A professional is someone who does the right thing even if they don't feel like it. |
Responsibility | The act of "responding" with "ability" based on your Skills and Attitudes. "You control your thoughts, your thoughts control your feelings, so you control your feelings." |
Side One | From the press box- the left half of the field. |
Side Two | From the press box- the right half of the field. |
Sideline | Front and back boundary of the field. Normal fields extend about a foot and a half longer in the back sidelines than the normal 52 yards from the front to the back. |
Skills | 20% of the qualities of a leader. Schedules time well, Knowledgeable, Initiates action, Listens well, Learns more, Success oriented. |
Time Management | "Putting first things first." Make these decisions based on your level of Responsibility and Professionalism. |
Hash Marks | Marks that divide the field horizontally into equal thirds. There are 28 (8 to 5) steps in each third, which equals 17.5 yards in each third. |
Hold The Form | A marching flow where the actual "picture" does not change as it moves on the field. |
In Side (IS) | Towards the center of the field in a horizontal direction. |
Interval | Side to side spacing in a straight or Curvilinear form. |
Linear | A straight line, which can refer to a Drill Form or marching path. |
Out Side (OS) | Away from the center of the field in a horizontal direction. |
Physical Projection | All elements of physical appearance as a performer: Posture, Carriage, Poise, Instrument or Equipment position, and Uniform. Appear as tall as possible. |
Roll The Feet | Refers to the correct marching style. "Peeling": Roll the foot up heel to toe. "Squeezing": Roll the foot down-heel to toe. Exaggerate the tow pointing up and extend the leg straight on forward marching. DO NOT roll the feet on back slides, because your leg will snap in half like a puny twig. |
Slide | A body posture where the upper half of the body is facing in a different direction than the lower half of the body, often used as a type of Flank turn. |
Slow Turn | A static or stationary turn executed in more than one count, which uses a smooth and consistent rotating motion similar to a "sweep", second hand on a watch. |
Soft Turn | A moving turn executed in more than one count, often used in Curvilinear FTL (Follow the Leader) Flows. |
Spatial Awareness | Being conscious of all field coordinates and other performers. "May the Farce be with you." |
Spacing | Being equally spaced between either front to back or side to side in a Linear or Curvilinear form. The two types of spacing are Distance and Interval. |
Symmetrical | Refers to a Form being the same on both sides. |
Yard Lines | Marks that divide the field vertically every 5 yards. The vertical center of the field is the 50 yard line. The yard lines are numbered in decreasing increments of 5 down to the "0" yard line at each end zone. |
1st Rule of Marching | Start together, move together, stop together. |
2nd Rule of Marching | Always be 1/2 of the way in between, front to back, or side to side. |
3rd Rule of Marching | Connect the line, either straight or curved, play dot to dot. |
4th Rule of Marching | Use Physical Projection. |
5th Rule of Marching | Play your music or execute your equipment routine, Do Your Job. |
Adjusted Size Step | A step size other than the standard 22.5" 8 to 5 step, used in "float" flows. |
Alignment | Being "in line" either front to back or side to side (Linear) or Curvilinear form. The two types of alignment are Dress and Cover. |
Asymmetrical | Meaning not symmetrical, refers to a Form being different on one side compared to the other. |
Back Slide | Marching backwards while staying up on toes with heels off of the ground. |
Cover | Being in line front to back. Back people are covered by the front people. A type of Alignment. |
Curvilinear | "Curved lines," can refer to drill Form or marching path. |
Distance | Front to back spacing in a Linear or Curvilinear form. |
Dress | Being in line side to side in a Linear or Curvilinear form. Line up the ankles. A type of Alignment. |
Dress Center | To set a Form with correct Spacing and Alignment from the inside to the outside. Executed at the command, "Dress Center Dress." |
8 to 5 | A standard 22.5" step, eight steps per five yards. |
End Zone | Side boundaries of a field. The Out Side of the "0" yard line. |
FTL | Follow The Leader. A type of Flow in which some marchers follow another marcher, generally in a Curvilinear pathway. |
Flank | A moving turn executed in one count. |
Float | A type of drill Flow that uses adjusted step sizes so marchers arrive at the same time. |
Flow | The movement or transition from one drill Form to another. |
Football Field | The performance area that belongs to the band and the band alone. 100 by 53.5 yards. |
Form | The actual "picture" being displayed by all marchers on the field. May contain elements of Linear, Curvilinear, Symmetry, or Asymmetry or any combination of these. |
Dot | Absolute position on the field with X and Y coordinates. Teach by the dots, clean by the form. |
Convex | An arc which resembles a smile from the audience's perspective. |
Concave | An arc which resembles a frown from the audience's perspective. |
Compound Curve | Or French Curve, a curvilinear form with both convex and concave elements. |
Block | A series of linear forms forming regular spacing and alignments. |
1st Stage of Learning | "Unconscious-incompetent," do it so you don't hurt anyone else, you don't know what you don't know, i.e. incoming freshmen. |
2nd Stage of Learning | "Conscious-incompetent," do it so that you don't hurt yourself, you know what you don't know- yet!, i.e. later freshmen. |
3rd Stage of Learning | "Conscious-competent," do it so that you can do it right, you know what you know, i.e. experienced marchers. |
4th Stage of Learning | "Unconscious, competent," you know but you don't know that you know, auto pilot, the hardest stage to obtain, i.e. experienced veteran marchers. |
1st Law of Student Leadership | You can't lead others until you can lead yourself. |
2nd Law of Student Leadership | You are only worth what you give away. |
3rd Law of Student Leadership | You can only give away what you've got. |

Attention Position | Heels together, toes pointing outward at a 45° angle from the center or First Position, body focused slightly forward with most of the weight on the balls of the feet. Knees slightly flexed but not visibly, locking the knee can cause fainting, lower abdominal muscles held in with shoulders down and relaxed, superman chest, ankle, hinge of the knee, hip, shoulder, and bone behind ear all vertically aligned, a.k.a. the Five Points of Alignment, chin elevated 10° looking over the person in front of you for confidence and breathing, and finally utilizing all aspects of Physical Projection. |
